The extreme fragmentation of the land in the Sierra Norte (Northern mountain region) of Ecuador is creating major problems for farmers in the area, as every day they find themselves forced to cultivate small plot of land (normally smaller than 2000 m2) in order to survive and provide their children with an adequate education. The only two solutions to this problem are the continuous improvement of the agricultural and the breeding productivity as well as the testing of new products that can provide high mark-ups.
Both the results can be easilty achieved through the creation of a training center for local farmers, which will take care of the following duties: transferring the knowledge about the most productive agricultural and breeding techniques to the local farmers; informing them about the risks of an inconsiderate use of chemical products; safeguarding local biodiversity; identifiying the most profitable agricultural activities. Indeed, together with the training activities, several business activities will be set-up and developed, in order to let the center to be economically independent.
