During the last years, the Diocese of San and the local Caritas have been carrying out an integrated program aimed to support several initiatives for the sustainable development of the region. Having achieved important results after the first 6 years of work (2006-2011), the objective set up for the next three-year-plan is to strenghten and improve such results in order to get an increased sustainability of the undertaken activities. Even if the microfinance programs have already been set-up in the earlier stage, they still require a more structured and stringent regulation. The microfinance system is based on the CVECAs (self-governing rural banks), also known as SFD (Decentralized Financial Systems). Despite the efforts of their members, such institutions have not been able to finance income-generating activities yet. In fact, the skills and the technical knowledge of the CVECAs’ managers have not proved so far to be enough developed to meet the decentralizing needs of such financial systems.
To improve the quality and the reliability of the CVECAs system will generate a positive impact and spin-offs on all the economic activities in the area, improving the living conditions of the local community.
